A Letter to Mr. Zhou Ning

This letter, addressed to Mr. Zhou Ning, is a personal reflection on the current state of higher education and the moral and cultural environment of contemporary society. In it, I express concern that universities have become overly focused on grades, certificates, and practical skills, while neglecting the cultivation of virtue, character, and a deeper understanding of life. I contrast the classical ideals of education—emphasizing moral development, wisdom, and cultural grounding—with the present reality, where students often pursue success without reflection on purpose or ethics. Through personal anecdotes and philosophical reflection, I explore the importance of connecting education with cultural roots and ethical values, and I call on both educators and students to restore the true mission of the university: to nurture thoughtful, virtuous, and morally grounded individuals.
